Maryville’s and Savannah’s baseball teams set their sites on district play after finishing the regular season in a 12-5 Savage win in Maryville yesterday. Savannah got 12 players to the plate in a six-run sixth inning to open up a Midland Empire Conference game at Maryville High School. Lee McFadden scored three runs and Travis Partridge drew three walks and scored twice for Savannah. Maryville was led by Tyler Oglesby who was 1-2 with a sacrifice fly and scored two runs. Savannah opens districts tomorrow afternoon against fifth seeded Lafayette while Maryville will face Kearney in tomorrow’s first round from Phil Welch Stadium. You will hear the Hounds on 97-1 The ‘Vill starting at 12:20 pm tomorrow.



A third straight extra inning loss for the Northwest Missouri State softball team has them playing in the elimination bracket of the North Central Regional Tournament. The Bearcats dropped a 3-2 decision in eight innings against Southwest Minnesota State. That came after losing its last two MIAA tournament games in extra innings last weekend. Northwest bounced back to beat Central Missouri, 1-0 in 11 innings after Erin Leslie scored from second on a Jennies error. Northwest waits for its next opponent. Nebraska-Omaha and host Emporia State will play this afternoon, the team that loses that game will play Northwest tonight.



Both Northwest Missouri State tennis teams will play in regional finals today. Northwest’s men’s team handled Emporia State 5-1 in yesterday’s first round, winning all three doubles matches and needing to finish just three singles matches to secure the win. Northwest will now face Washburn for the regional championship today. The women’s team swept the doubles matches and got individual wins from Kristina Vucenov and Jordan Lipira to secure a 5-0 win over Winona State. The Northwest women will face Emporia State for the regional championship today.



KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Daniel Cabrera held Kansas City to three hits as the Baltimore Orioles beat Kansas City 4-1. Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer for the Orioles, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Markakis homered off rookie Luke Hochevar (2-2). Hochevar pitched seven innings, giving up four runs on five hits. Tony Pena Jr. singled to score Ross Gload for the Royals' only run.



DENVER (AP) - Matt Holliday had four singles and scored three runs as Colorado beat St. Louis 9-3. Jorge De La Rosa held the Cardinals to five hits over 5 2-3 innings as the Rockies won two in a row at Coors Field for the first time since early April. Cardinals' starter Kyle Lohse (3-2) gave up seven runs and eight hits in four innings. Omar Quintanilla added a career-high three hits and Garrett Atkins finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs for the Rockies. Ryan Ludwick hit two solo home runs for the Cardinals. Albert Pujols singled to run his streak of reaching base to 36 straight games.



COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Missouri forward Leo Lyons has withdrawn his name from the NBA draft and will return for his senior season. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound Lyons led the Big 12 Conference in field goal percentage. He said he made the decision after meeting with coach Mike Anderson and his staff, based on feedback from NBA teams as well as family and friends. Lyons said graduating is important to him and his mother. Lyons led Missouri with a 13.1-point average while shooting 58.3 percent, 23rd best in the nation. He averaged 14.3 points and 6.5 points in conference play. Lyons averaged 16.1 points and eight rebounds the last 16 games, including a career-high 27 points and 18 rebounds against Oklahoma State.



LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - The University of Kansas athletics department is asking a merchants group to reimburse the cost of canceling its basketball banquet. The department asked Downtown Lawrence and the Chamber of Commerce to pay the $6,400 cost of canceling the banquet in favor of a victory parade and celebration at Allen Fieldhouse. The groups encouraged the athletics department to have the events to celebrate KU's NCAA title. The head of Downtown Lawrence says the consensus among members is to decline the request.
